Graydon Carter says in our cover story: “A magazine is a great
invention. You take the best things you can find from around the world,
you put together great stories, great photography and you give it to the
consumer for $5. They can pass it on to somebody else; they can recycle
it. If they loose it they can buy another one. It’s available
everywhere, and we’ll send it to their door for less. That’s a pretty
good deal. Magazines are a very viable part of our lives and will be for
as long as people are alive.”

As far as Graydon's quote. He seems to be leading his thoughts towards print. I want to break apart the quote, and see what applies to print, and what also, to digital:
1)"A magazine is a great
invention."
Conceptually yes. And that concept is applicable to digital, as well.
2) "You take the best things you can find from around the world,
you put together great stories, great photography and you give it to the
consumer for $5."
Also applicable to digital.
3) They can pass it on to somebody else;
Again he's referencing print, and physically passing it on to someone else. But on the digital front, if designed correctly, social sharing is within the vision of "pass it on". Though on digital, publishers don't seem to have gone along with passing on the digital issue you bought, for free to a friend.
4) "they can recycle
it."
Print.
5) If they loose it they can buy another one.
Not so easy to buy old, out of print, issues. In digital you don't need to worry about loosing it. It lives on forever.
6) "It’s available
everywhere,"
If he's referencing print, that's not true. Print magazine's are not available everywhere. In digital that possibility of "everywhere" is more achievable.
7) "and we’ll send it to their door for less."
Less then, and faster, than digital?
8) That’s a pretty
good deal.
Print is really not. Cost of paper and trees. Delivery time. Terrible view of double page image. Deterioration of the paper. Physical storage. Lack of animation/video. Error corrections. etc... The digital plus' far out-weight the print.
9) "Magazines are a very viable part of our lives and will be for
as long as people are alive."
The concept of a magazine, yes. Print magazine is anyone's guess. Human's are terrible at predicting the future.
