Rookie

Tavi's mag gets an official name, crew, and some other details:

Rookie She was preparing for the first issue of her new magazine, which she has named Rookie. As it turns out, Pratt (who started her own Web site, xoJane.com) is not officially involved, although she will appear on the contributors’ page as “fairy godmother.”

...

Ultimately, the Gevinsons assembled a professional team: Jeremy Zilar (also from The Times), who is the project manager; a cast of regular writers that includes Lesley Arfin and Sady Doyle; and celebrity guest contributors — “But our version, which is just people we like”— like Dan Savage and Miranda July.

Even without Pratt at its helm, Rookie will resemble Sassy in spirit. “Our content respects a kind of intelligence in the readers that right now a lot of writing about teenage girls doesn’t,” Gevinson told me. “People think it’s just going to be another site or magazine that talks about how great celebrities are or how awful celebrities are or dieting. . . .” she said. “And I’m like, ‘Just you wait and see. ’ ”

'The Skin I Live In' Latest Film by Almodóvar

The Skin I Live In by Pedro Almodóvar. In theaters October 14, 2011.

The Skin I Live In Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years, he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault.

In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed three more things: no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. Marilia, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born, is his most faithful accomplice, and also the human guinea pig.

Looks great.

Exhibition: Tainted Beauty

Deborah Turbeville

Ahead of her much-anticipated exhibition Tainted Beauty at Donna Karan's London boutique, we present an exclusive portfolio from the iconic fashion and art photographer Deborah Turbeville. Classically composed, softly focused, elegant and melancholic, Turbeville’s distinctive photographic tableaux present us with broken narratives. Describing herself as “avant-garde and extreme”, her stories are only partly told, featuring seemingly lost characters connected to the audience through their direct yet subdued interaction with the camera’s lens. Born in 1938, Turbeville is of a generation of fashion photographers, alongside Richard Avedon and Guy Bourdin, who focused on the subject in their photographs as opposed to the clothes they are wearing, and who followed their own distinct conceptual agenda, rather than that of the stylist. With her work collated together for the first time in a forthcoming monograph from Rizzoli, we discuss Turbeville’s legacy with designer and Turbeville collector Donna Karan, alongside founder of The Wapping Project and curator of Tainted Beauty, Jules Wright.

Paz de la Huerta for Agent Provocateur

Paz de la Huerta Agent Provocateur

The lingerie label has picked actress Paz de la Huerta, known for her role as Lucy Danziger in HBO’s Twenties drama “Boardwalk Empire,” to appear in a series of short films directed by Johan Renck. The films will be shown on Agent Provocateur’s Web site, and Renck has also shot the accompanying stills campaign. In the images, De la Huerta plays on her risqué “It” girl persona, cheekily flashing her Agent Provocateur lingerie as she’s pursued by the paparazzi.

“We always try and choose girls that are true Agent Provocateurs, and she definitely is AP through and through,” said Sarah Shotton, the brand’s creative director. “She’s got an amazing body and she’s naturally very, very sexy.”

Kubrick:

The truth of a thing is in the feel of it, not the think of it.

Stanley Kubrick interview.

We live in a time where the think is perceived and weight more important than the feel. All artists, to be considered worthy, must now be graduates of the likes of Yale. Pure conceptual art is a by product of this movement. I can even theorize that robots can become artists if they are programed to output conceptually. I am not against conceptual art, but it must be combined with the feel if it's to touch on our human emotion. We survive on the feel.

Also on the amount of painstaking research that went into his films:

What kind of research do you have going on right now?

The first step has been to read everything I could get my hands on about Napoleon, and totally immerse myself in his life. I guess I must have gone through several hundred books on the subject, from contemporary nineteenth-century English and French accounts to modern biographies. I've ransacked all these books for research material and broken it down into categories on everything from his food tastes to the weather on the day of a specific battle, and cross-indexed all the data in a comprehensive research file. In addition to my own reading, I've worked out a consultant arrangement with Professor Felix Markham of Oxford, a history don who has spent the last thirty- five years of his life studying Napoleon and is considered one of the world's leading Napoleonic experts. He's available to answer any questions that derive from my own reading or outside of it. We're also in the process of creating prototypes of vehicles, weapons, and costumes of the period which will subsequently be mass-produced, all copied from paintings and written descriptions of the time and accurate in every detail. We already have twenty people working full time on the preparatory stage of the film.

This film was sadly never made, due to budget. But there is a book about it.

Good Reads | Samurai

Film

Ichimei1 What is the fascination for you with the samurai?

Takashi Miike: The samurai that we talk about and the samurai the historians perceive - it's very different. Because these are fictional images of what we perceive to be samurai. When I was a child, period drama was on television every day and within that context we started creating this image of a samurai. So you can say that the samurai you see now is the image of a samurai born out of film.
