The term Jolly Sailor Bold is a small reference to the original sea shanty of the same name. This song is taking a first-person perspective of Caroline, the woman who fell in love with a sailor that she saw passing by her window. He told her the sea is no place for lovers, but she dressed as a sailor and went with him regardless. They shipwrecked three times, each time they survived because of the tenacity of Caroline, before she persuaded her sailor to return with her home and marry her with her fathers consent. After their marriage, they returned to sail the seas.
