Good Reads | Planning The Alexander McQueen–Themed Met Ball

Events

Sylvana Soto-Ward How does planning the party this year compare to doing it for the first time last year? What are you glad you know this time around?
Simple things, like which gallery in the Met has cell service. Like if you really need to reach someone and you have no bars because you're in the Egyptian wing, but if you move five feet to the right you have two bars — which you learn after spending hours and hours living in the Met, which I have.

Last year's gala opened the Costume Institute's exhibit on American fashion, which was very different from the McQueen exhibit. So how does this year's party differ from last year's?
We switched rooms this year, so we're having the dinner in the Temple, which is great — there are a lot less statues to move so that's nice. Obviously décor and all those things are secret but if you buy the iPad app you can have a sneak peak as to what the décor might look like. But I can say it's very much in keeping with Alexander's aesthetic — he's done everything from gothic to extremely romantic and ethereal, so I think people will be very, very excited to see how we've interpreted his career. It's going to be very, very beautiful; last year was very simple, American, clean lines, we worked with Gap. This is much more elegant and involved.

Good Reads | “An Evening With the Sartorialist”

Interviews

Two seprate interviews by Style.com & Interview Magazine from yesterday's “An Evening With the Sartorialist”. An event put on by Fiat to present some of Schuman's favorite imags of Italian style at the Italian auto marque's soho pop-up gallery.

OK, so you’re not Kate Middleton’s mystery designer. But if you saw her walking down the street, would you shoot her?
Uh…next question. [Her dress] seemed appropriate for the day.

That seems to be the consensus. In other news, Fiat is presenting “An Evening With the Sartorialist” tonight. What’ll we see there?
Just, like, a mini presentation of images that highlight Italian style. Fiat called me because, you know, I have a particular fondness for Italian style. It’s more about craftsmanship and fit and beauty than it is necessarily, you know, over-the-top wildness. So we printed photographs—we actually printed them probably about four times larger than the ones I usually print. They’re 30″ x 40″, so they’re pretty good-sized prints—beautiful Italian style at its best.

I see it especially in Italian men's style. I think that it comes off as incredibly elegant, but it's also artfully effortless. They look so natural in what they're wearing.

Scott Schuman SCHUMAN: But that's where I would challenge that. Everyone's perfect idea is this idea of effortless because then they think, oh, I could be effortless by not putting any effort into it, and maybe I'll look great. [laughs] Where with these Italian guys, there's no effortless. They put a lot of effort into it. But they put the effort into it the very beginning, when they're buying it, having it tailored, altered, all that kind of stuff. That's why I say that I think it's the grace in which they wear the clothes. Once they put the clothes on, it's effortless in the way they wear the clothes. There's no formality, there's no rigidity, at least not in the ones I shoot. It's effortless in the way they inhabit the clothes.

There's a moment in the film when you ask a woman to photograph her and she kind of turns her nose up at you. When she finds out what it's for, her attitude totally changes and she completely relaxes. You've become incredibly well known. Has that changed your photography and what you're doing?

SCHUMAN: I think the way it's changed it is that it affords me the time to get the shot I want. A girl like that before, maybe she would have said no and I would have said okay and just walked away. Now it just takes a minute and if I tell them the site, they say, "Oh yeah, that's really great." So it doesn't really change who I ask, but for the people that know who I am, it just gives me more time, I don't have to shoot as quickly and they'll be more comfortable. We can walk, maybe, for a block before I find a shot that's just right. Before, I had to shoot it quick before they'd decide okay, that's it, that's all the time you get it. Now, they're willing to give you more time and work with you a little more, are more patient if you ask them to turn a shoulder or something. They're also more comfortable; they think, "Okay, wow, I might be able to get a really great picture here." But that's just in certain areas. I like the challenge of constantly going to new places, it keeps me on my toes. If I just kept rolling around where people knew my work, it would get old after a while.

If you don’t believe that fashion is a religious sect unto itself—and a fast-growing one at that—well, maybe you should pray a little harder. Need you be reminded that today’s most awe-inspiring transfigurations are achieved by supermodels, not saints? (Easy to confuse the two, granted.) Should you be one of these lamentable non-believers, you might want to check out Visionaire’s latest issue, devoted to religion and guest-edited by Riccardo Tisci in collaboration with Givenchy.

DNA Models Suing FORD Models Over Maryna Linchuk

Reuters is reporting that DNA Models Agency is suing Ford Models over model Maryna Linchuk.

Maryna Linchuk Two agencies are staking a claim to high-fashion model Maryna Linchuk, and now the fight over her contract has gone to court.

DNA Model Management is suing Ford Models, one of its main competitors, for allegedly luring Linchuk away and damaging DNA's reputation.

DNA accuses Ford of tortuous interference with contract and unfair competition. It seeks at least $2 million in damages, according to the complaint filed Wednesday in New York Supreme Court. The lawsuit also accuses the model of breaching her contract with DNA.

Linchuk, who has appeared on the covers of Portuguese and Italian Vogue, signed an exclusive management agreement in 2006, the complaint says. Since then it says DNA has advanced "significant sums of money to Linchuk and on her behalf."

"From February 2006 to the present, DNA has invested heavily in promoting, marketing and managing Linchuk's career and professional image, preparing her for and helping her choose modeling assignments, shoots, etc.," the lawsuit says. "As a direct result of DNA's efforts, Linchuk has become a successful and sought after model."

She signed on for another two years in 2008, but on April 15 of this year, she sent DNA an e-mail saying she was thinking of leaving. Immediately thereafter, DNA received an e-mail from a representative of Ford following up on the model's request that DNA pass any bookings or options to him.

"Ford through its representatives solicited and induced Linchuk to break her contract with DNA," the lawsuit says. "But for said actions, Linchuk would have not breached her contract with DNA."

The damage goes beyond the broken pact with Linchuk, according to DNA. "Ford continues to contact DNA's business clients and contacts, advising of Linchuk's alleged dissatisfaction with DNA, damaging DNA's business reputation within the modeling community," the lawsuit says.

The case is DNA Model Management v. Ford Models and Maryna Linchuk, New York Supreme Court, No. 651113/2011.

So the suit is also against Maryna her self, not only Ford.

Earlier this week Ford also started representing Kate King, taking her away from Elite. But per a commenter on this blog, that was due to her agent moving to Ford, with Kate just going along with him/her.

The question one would ask is: should the model be loyal to the agency, or the agent? As another commenter put it:

^^ Oh what a "sick" world! Ford cant stop stealing the girls! Elite discovered Kate at the age of 13 and did A LOT FOR her development! She has to thank them for becoming a top newcomer this season!

Speaking of Elite and agency drama, last week The Imagist, in a soopu du jour, reported that:

The Hiss Squad is reporting that long time Elite veteran Richard Habberly has exited Elite with suspicion brewing that key girls like Dree and Alessandra are now about to go into play. Add to that the departure of power scout Doll Wright and it is clear another agency shift is afoot. Who will fill in the freshly created vacuum ? Rumors are a very recent IMG departee might be handed the keys to the kingdom....

So is this Richard Habberly the agent who went to Ford, with Kate king? I don't know. Do you? Email me what you know.
