Here is a good example of what you as a photographer, stylist, or any type of creative with a portfolio might consider implementing in an App, should you go down that route.
We're taking a look at the just released iPhone & iPad app by photographer Vivienne Balla. (download here)
The app, as you'll see in the images and video below, is smart both in design, information, and sharing capabilities. It is split into:
- Latest portfolio
- Backstage Videos
- Vivienne's Diary - Tumblr blog
- Exclusive wallpapers for iPhone & iPad
- Available in English, Italian, French & Hungarian
- Sharing pictures on Facebook, and Email
- Various interfaces on iPhone & iPad
I'll be curious to know what it cost to put an app like this together, but as she noted on her blog post the app did take "many, many hours are in development,". I would presume many of those went into simplifying it as well. But I think the final result is quiet great. She could have added a lot more but the idea here is to share who you are, what you do and examples of your work. She also notes that over 500 downloads already took place without her advertising it.
While we're talking apps, I did just come across a company called Red Foundry that claims to be able to help you build sophisticated apps without any coding. I have not done my home work on it yet, but I thought I mention it. It claims to be way more sophisticated than the other DIY options already out there.
if you know more, or have experince in these things do share with us.

Given the nature of contemporary art practice, the condition of visual culture, the advent of new technologies, and many other factors, what is at stake today in seeing something as a photograph? What is the value of continuing to speak of photography as a specific practice or discipline? Is photography over? In April 2010, SFMOMA convened a range of major thinkers and practitioners to write brief responses to this question and to convene for a two-day summit on the state of medium.
Day One, Part One. Participants: Peter Galassi, Blake Stimson, Joel Snyder, Douglas Nickel, Vince Aletti, Corey Keller, and Philip-Lorca diCorcia. Moderated by Dominic Willsdon and Erin O'Toole.
Part two below.
I was happy for Rodarte’s persistent publicity efforts at first; I’m so proud of the film and anything that brings it to an even wider audience is genuinely welcome. I tried to put aside my ego while being airbrushed from history in all of their interviews, as I’m just not that kind of person anyway. But when articles were planted that attacked me personally as if I had conspired against them I felt nothing but despair and betrayal. I don’t have a publicist working for me, needless to say, and I was asked to stay quiet –“not to engage”, to avoid any bad press towards the film. Unfortunately this seems to have proven detrimental to the perception of my work on Black Swan. I didn’t make the rules that the Guild and the Academy set and I am proud of my professionalism and commitment to my work, so to have my name dragged into such ill-informed gossip is galling and hurtful to say the least.
Burn them.

Designers / Q&A
Yes, I’m Australian but grew up in Hong Kong and Sydney and now split my time between London and New York. I did a degree in Photography and have always worked in design and fashion. I saw sunglasses as a product that weren’t being made well, generally speaking. Italian style is a huge influence for Zanzan, but it seems to have lost its way. That’s part of the problem with sunglasses; they’re all made in Italy (well China really but let’s skip that). We saw the opportunity to bring an English style sensibility to the conservatism of the industry and to present a more strident visual statement to support the product. Sunglasses have gotten boring, but why? What could be more glamorous?
Zanzan is the eyewear company I went crazy about last week.

“Oh my God, I’m more naked that I was in Playboy. I’m so mad right now. [The magazine] promised I would be covered with artwork — you can see the nipples! The whole concept was sold to me that nothing would be seen. I feel so taken advantage of … I’ve definitely learned my lesson. I’m never taking my clothes off again, even if it’s for Vogue.”
