Gravure Magazine | A Delightful Experience
Well I stopped by the magazine stand last night, and picked up a copy of Gravure magazine (currently issue: #3). It was wrapped in clear plastic and felt like a solid newspaper in my hand. What I noticed through the plastic was that it's pages right edges were not trimmed--imagine you take a stack of papers and fold them in half, because of the thickness they wont be even on one side, but start to poke out of each other--and neither were the glued or stapled on the opposite side. [Interesting]. When I later, at home, took it out of it's plastic protection, I noticed the pages were actually not only stacked inside each other, but they were also made of larger pieces of papers that were folded in fours and perforated. Meaning that, in order for me to flip through them I had to break them apart. Surprisingly this was quite enjoyable and I felt I was unwrapping a gift, and the time spent doing so only added to the anticipation and excitement of seeing what's inside!
Was all this done intentionally by the magazine? I'm not sure. But it was a new experience for me with a fashion magazine, that I had not gone through before. [The closest I came to such was the The Last magazine where I had to simply unfold it's large pages that were folded in four.]
Now the content.
It's as fabulous. And yes there is a whole lot of nudity. But it's fabulous because of a slice of uniqueness and point of view that they paid very careful attention to. The magazine is done in B&W with few colored fonts. And its main purpose is designers and a feel-through dreamy editorials. There is the Rodarte sister's interview, as well as commentary from few other NY designers. But it's the photography that rules supreme here. And any magazine that chooses Camille Mervin as a model will always get my respect.
Editorials included titles such as "Idol Hours", "Nesting Instinct" and Camille's "Tree Hungger". I don't want to give away more then this but they give you an idea of the mood. Check it out and tell me what you think. Maybe this is a new way of doing mags.

I liked NEST magazine too - it always had a neat theme going on.
