In the current issue of i-D Magazine, Azzedine Alaïa shares a little story, in an interview, from back when, about what a little change in style can do to a lady. Just like Cinderella, he helped a young beauty meet her prince charming, by a simple tuck in a flared black dress and slipping on a Dior pair of shoes.
"I used to take care of some children for an Austrian girl at the weekends. Oh she wore traditional Austrian dress with a tight chignon and stomped like a solider like you couldn’t believe, but she was incredibly cute and had a tiny upturned nose with very, very white skin and a beautiful body. One day I saw a sign in a hairdressers looking for models for a contest. I went back to her and said, ‘I’ve got a good idea for you, you’ll make some money so you’ll be able to go to the nightclubs like the Lido’—because she really wanted to go. I said ‘you can’t go to the hairdresser looking like this, in this Austrian style nobody will notice you.’ She had a plain black skirt that flared out so we took it and tucked it in around the bottom, showed her how to walk then got her some shoes from someone I knew at Dior. After this transformation everyone was happy because they were tired of seeing this solider woman stomping everywhere! She did hair modeling for a while and eventually found a husband, a chic Parisian type with a beautiful town house. She invited me to meet him. Her life had changed, she was in love and everything had happened because we had changed her look.”
